Underground Atlanta Project Description

As the Project Architect and Architectural Designer, I was responsible for the design of all of the new storefronts of the c.1880 historical structures for the 200,000 square foot, $142 million four-block project.  I led an 18-person team of architects, designers and student interns from the design phase through completion of construction documents.  This included on-site field verification of existing conditions, in addition to review of historical, if available, original drawings, to design and document each storefront.  The design of each building’s façade was different, consequently, each storefront façade was given it’s own character.

Where possible, emphasis was given to the restoration and preservation of existing historical artifacts and building elements within the remaining structures that comprised the four-block area of the project.  This including working with the contractors and sub-contractors at each stage of the process to assure that the design intent was maintained.

Subsequently became responsible for construction administration for the work including, in addition to the historical storefronts, coordination of all piping under the historic viaduct structures,

Prepared and implemented alternative designs from the consultant engineer’s “wall of louvers” design that provided concealed fresh air make up for the smoke evacuation system.

Created the reuse of four discovered cast-iron columns that were found during partial demolition of the rear portion of an existing building to provide a new service and egress area.  The four cast iron columns were placed just in front of the new façade, as an example of what could have been.

Underground Atlanta reopened on June 15, 1989 after a $142 million renovation that started in 1987.
